Description

Stuffed cabbage rolls merge convenience with complex flavors, making for a satisfying meal perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head of green cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme or Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and submerge the entire head. Blanch for about 5 minutes, or until the outer leaves are pliable.
  2. Discard the tough inner leaves and remove the softened leaves, allowing them to cool.
  3. Sauté the onions and garlic in a medium skillet until fragrant and translucent. Incorporate the ground beef, cooking until browned.
  4. Remove from heat, then add the cooked rice, thyme, salt, and pepper, mixing thoroughly.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of tomato sauce.
  6. Take a cabbage leaf, place a generous spoonful of the beef mixture at its base, fold in the sides, and roll it up tightly. Repeat until all leaves and filling are used.
  7. Arrange the rolls seam side down in the baking dish. Pour the remaining tomato sauce and diced tomatoes over the top, adding sugar.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 60 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, allowing for a rich, bubbly sauce.
  10. Let rest for a few minutes before serving, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

Consider using beef broth instead of water for cooking the rice for added flavor.
